5 Ways To Relax –

Far Cry 3 Logo

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please visit Amazon.com to get your own copy of Far Cry 3, today’s Gold Box Deal of the Day! I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. All opinions are my own.

Life is full of stressful events; i.e, work, family and friends. Decompressing or relaxing is challenging when you are a parent. You quickly learn that “free time” is treasured and almost non-existent. Finding the proper balance of “me time” versus “family time” is hard but not totally impossible.

5 Ways To

1. Writing – One of the ways I have learned to relax is to write. If I have a stressful day I have found that putting my feelings on paper (figuratively only…I use a computer) helps to reduce tension. It can help me to find solutions to problems or cope with an ongoing situation better.

2. Reading – The moment I pick-up a book I can find myself “lost” in an adventure. It is through my love of reading that I have been able to become a “super spy”, travel the globe and visit different worlds. Relaxation is easy to find when I am reading a book.

3. Music – When I have had a stressful day I turn the radio on. In fact, I not only turn the radio on, I turn the radio on loudly! As William Congreve said, “Music has charms to soothe a savage beast.” (I feel if music can soothe me it can soothe anything)!

4. Video games – My son isn’t old enough to play the mature games, such as Far Cry 3, but he is old enough to ask for a dance off (such as Just Dance 4).  Video games are a way that I can relax and become competitive at the same time. (always a good combination)!

5. Family and friends – Spending quality time with my family and friends is a good form of stress relief. It is because of my family and friend that I am able to stay motivated and focused on the positive aspects of my life. The people in my life allow me to write consistently and continue to do the things I love.

Dad laying on the couch relaxing! He has on his cowboy hat and boots!

Doesn’t everyone relax with their hat on???

It’s not always easy to relax! What do you do that helps you decompress? Do you generally find ways to relax alone or with your family? Tell me in the comments!!!

  1. Writing, reading, playing games w/my kids, fiddling with photos, and surfing blogs…that’s my five. :) I read your side bar and instantly got a soft spot… my daughter in law has that job (Social Services) and it’s no fun at all. :(

    • Rosey,

As a former social worker, that investigated child abuse, I can tell you it is one of the most emotionally draining jobs anyone can ever have. It became impossible to be able to do it effectively and be a father at the same time. So, I definitely understand what your daughter-in-law goes through. It did give me the ability to want to promote fatherhood and all the positive aspects of parenting. It was one of the things I realized that was missing in many homes (dads that weren’t deadbeats).

      • My daughter-in-law is expecting her first child, and has given her notification that she will not return after she has the baby (she’s staying until her due date). It’s really tough on her, of course she doesn’t give specifics, but she doesn’t need to, every parent already knows that even one issue would be troublesome…seeing them regularly would just be heartwrenching, I already know.

        • Rosey,

You hit all the pertinent issues in your reply. I couldn’t be effective anymore and “try” to be non-judgmental (which was my job). It came to the point all I could think about was having a child and how much I wouldn’t want these things to happen to him.

  2. If I am emotional and need a distraction, reading rarely helps. I can’t seem to concentrate for whatever reason. The same applies to watching television.

But writing is absolutely amazing in helping me forget whatever is going on. Additionally, all of that built-up emotion actually goes in to whatever I’m writing and produces surprising results.

Music is a wonderful escape as well, but family and friends are definitely the best cope.

    Great post :)

    • One of the beauties of writing for me is the fact I can lose myself in it. I can do the same with reading but with writing I can choose my destination and discover the ending on my own. It is a definite stress release!! I have kept journals since i was 16 years-old so I know it works for me!

  3. Reading, reading, reading! That is my way of relaxing. Go away, world! Be quiet so I can read! lolz!!! :)

    • Andi-Roo,

I relate! I love to read (although Xan has seriously cut into that for me…lol) Music has always been my Achilles heel. I turn it up loud and can seriously irritate people (okay…maybe I can’t hear them yelling at me to turn it down) I might be worse than a teenager….yikes (who said dad had to grow up?????)

  4. For me, getting outside works well. A good walk in the country tends to put things back into perspective.
Music is good too. I play guitar, and expressing through music helps, as sometimes just listening isn’t enough.

    • I played piano for years (I haven’t in forever though) I remember very well that music was a way to calm myself or just get out some “raw” emotions. It is part of the reason I still turn it up loud! Gardening can be great too. Its always a nice feeling to tend plants and grow something.

  5. Jason,

I am still working on Assassin’s Creed 3 (I got it for free to “test” too) It has been a nice perk for me about blogging. I keep remembering that my mom said video games would never amount to anything…lol
